Manhattan murder mystery with a grabbing start, and then a lot of grip-loosening for romantic dalliance and comic doodles. The mystery itself, when intermittently remembered, never regains its hold: the "special investigator" on the case goes way beyond the normal eccentricity allowed a Great Detective ("He's a fuckin' beatnik! He's got a beatnik mentality!"); and the murderer, it comes to light, has been selecting his victims through a combination of factors including prime numbers, an astral constellation, and the notes of a pop song. Well, okay -- but why? (Where is Ellery Queen when we need him?) With Kevin Kline, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Keitel, Rod Steiger, and Alan Rickman; written by John Patrick Shanley; directed by Pat O'Connor. (1989) — Duncan Shepherd
