Considering all the cuteness afoot in Girl Friends, it could hardly be expected that Claudia Weill's first film for a major Hollywood studio would curb the trend. There is a certain amount of naturalistic filigree around the unconvincing lovers -- a female math professor and a retired baseball player -- and a certain amount of clumsy technique. But it would be pure flattery to take that stuff as a principled repudiation of slickness. With Jill Clayburgh, Michael Douglas, and Charles Grodin. (1980) — Duncan Shepherd
