Thinking he’s a shoo-in for the second-in-command spot at a deluxe French resort, a designing lawyer (Guillaume Canet) whose ambitions far exceed his needs finds his allegiance to his biggest client and boss (Catherine Deneuve) pushed to the limit after another is hired in his place. Skillfully playing mother (Deneuve) against heiress (Adèle Haenel) eventually positions Canet as the main suspect in the latter’s unsolved disappearance. The plot of this fact-based thriller-in-waiting takes 90 long minutes to install. When director and co-writer André Téchiné finally gets around to cutting to the chase, a flash forward 30 years into the future finds our brave cast trapped in a courtroom and buried beneath layers of Max Factor. There’s enough groundwork condensed into the final crawl to warrant two sequels, leaving one to ponder why room wasn’t trimmed from the first third to accommodate a more detailed view.
