Old-fashioned wartime romance, a bit faded, a bit wilted, but after all it's an old war -- the Great War -- and the romance is the historical one of Ernie "Kid" Hemingway and his Red Cross nurse in Italy. (The leg wound, the near amputation, and the broken heart would burgeon, we may surmise, into the literal castration of the narrator-hero in The Sun Also Rises. And the budding novelist would get even by killing off the nurse in A Farewell to Arms.) Sandra Bullock replaces some her overstrained cuteness with some newfound dignity, and Chris O'Donnell wisely refrains from foreshadowings of "Papa" Hemingway. Directed by Richard Attenborough.
