Gender-bender comedy inspired by Tom Hanks's thanks to his gay high-school teacher during his Oscar acceptance speech for Philadelphia. What if a teacher "outed" on the Oscarcast were scheduled to be married at the end of the week? The movie has steady fun with sexual stereotypes, Hollywood types, TV types, etc., until the teacher undergoes a middle-age sexual awakening and "outs" himself at the actual wedding, after which the movie begins a steady descent into propaganda and preachment. And it leaves its most tantalizing questions dangling: is it possible for a straight man to like Barbra Streisand? to read poetry? to wear bow ties? Kevin Kline, Joan Cusack, Tom Selleck, Matt Dillon, Debbie Reynolds, Wilford Brimley; written by Paul Rudnick; directed by Frank Oz. (1997) — Duncan Shepherd
