Backstage comedy, set a century ago in New York City, though most of the characters have quaint Italian names (Tuccio, Flavio, Pallenchio, etc.). It manages to be alternately overstated and obscure, burlesque and arty. Star and director John Turturro, as in his Mac, gives a big part to his off-screen wife, Katherine Borowitz, and gets her to take off her top into the bargain. He gets his sister, Aida Turturro, an opposite physical type, to take off hers as well. Susan Sarandon and Georgina Cates join in the topless revelry, while Beverly D'Angelo stays buttoned. Ben Gazzara, Rufus Sewell, Donal McCann, Bill Irwin, David Thornton, Christopher Walken. (1999) — Duncan Shepherd
