A deferral of extinction and a detour to a subterranean tropical paradise, save some rapacious reptiles and a river of molten lava. The intermittent enlivener of the two earlier installments, the obsessive squirrel, is now as tedious as everyone else (in a mating dance, to a Barry White tune, with a bushy-tailed femme fatale squirrel); and the new character of a one-eyed weasel (voice of Simon Pegg) fails to take up the slack. No more beneficial is the added attraction of 3-D. Extinction can’t come soon enough. With the voices of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, and Queen Latifah; co-directed by Carlos Saldanha and Mike Thurmeier. (2009) — Duncan Shepherd
