Special pleading on behalf of the one-time prizefighter, Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, railroaded into jail by a Javert-like Philadelphia cop. The presentation is so lopsided that it arouses more mistrust than outrage. And the curious Toronto household (two men, one woman, and a black foster child from Brooklyn), credited with effectuating Carter's release after years of futile protest from the likes of Bob Dylan and Muhammad Ali, could have been better delineated. (Director Norman Jewison is himself a native Canadian, giving him a chauvinistic rooting interest.) Denzel Washington has an exciting style in the black-and-white fight footage, and a dignified style within the gray walls of prison. Liev Schreiber, John Hannah, Deborah Kara Unger, Vicellous Reon Shannon, Dan Hedaya. (1999) — Duncan Shepherd
