Past acquaintances want no part of Ashley (Andre Royo), yet the good natured career-schemer insists on living life as the cheeriest ex-con ever discharged from a three-year “vacation” in the pen. Ashley finds fresh blood in the form of bottom-feeder “Germ” (George Sample III), a copacetic cohort who makes cash as a human guinea pig for a medical research lab. As the titular forager, veteran character actor Royo piggybacks nuance, mining the grains of desperation needed to lock audience sympathy. The deck (and performance) stacked as they are – the guy is even determined to put an end to his illiteracy – rookie writer-director Joshua Locy makes it difficult to dislike the hapless jamoke. Ashley’s fall from grace is as inevitable as it is unwarranted, and once Locy decides it’s time to knock the permanent grin from off his character’s face, the punishment fails to fit the crime.
