This works hard to obscure the fact that it is a vampire movie (the fearful word is never uttered). But it will not manage to fool those who don't care for this sort of thing, and will manage only to irritate those who do. The maintenance of a Beautiful People lifestyle, with live chamber music, late-afternoon sherries, billowy diaphanous drapes, and so on, seems to be the sole concern of both the head vampire (Catherine Deneuve) and her director, Tony Scott. The latter -- the brother of director Ridley Scott -- had heretofore devoted his talents to TV commercials and never before to feature films. One wants to say "never yet." If he has advanced at all beyond the television-ad mentality, it is only as far beyond as an MTV video. With David Bowie and Susan Sarandon. (1983) — Duncan Shepherd
