An epidemic of lycanthropy in and around a culty psychiatric clinic in Northern California. Slow to get going, and toward the end, if not sooner, it is drawing more off Invasion of the Body Snatchers than off werewolf legends. Numerous tangential allusions to the subject — a mention of Wolfman Jack, a can of Wolf's chili, a book of Thomas Wolfe's, Allen Ginsberg's Howl — add nothing except to our impression of the moviemakers as smart-alecks. Rob Bottin's special effects, which transform a human being into the Big Bad Wolf of Three Little Pigs, are certainly show-stoppers, but they would probably be more impressive if you were ten years old. With Dee Wallace, Patrick MacNee, Dennis Dugan, and Elisabeth Brooks; written by John Sayles and directed by Terence Winkless; directed by Joe Dante. (1978) — Duncan Shepherd
