Teen romance in the Fifties, as revealed through movie and TV clips, newsreels, sex-education films, and present-day interviews. Many of the interviewees (very hip, in sharp contrast to the square archive footage) are too young to have done much dating and mating in the Fifties, so maybe the topic is meant to be Early Sexual Experience in general. But then why are all the clips and background music limited to the Fifties? In any event, the material is jumbled together with so much liberty and so little identification as to tear it down as documentary and build it up as simple smart-aleckry. Pity, because the archive stuff looks highly valuable, even precious ("No, you didn't get syphilis from a toilet seat, Bill"). The interview stuff is almost worthless. Laurie Anderson, Sandra Bernhard, David Byrne, Spalding Gray, Abbie Hoffman, Ann Magnuson, Josh Mostel, others; directed by Obie Benz. (1989) — Duncan Shepherd
