A bit of a plodder. A young Englishwoman (Julie Christie) follows in the footsteps in India, two generations previously, of a family friend (Greta Scacchi), all the way to getting herself impregnated by a native. The larger amounts of time and interest are apportioned to the flashbacks to the colonial era. It takes some time for even these to become interesting (what is that mysterious turbaned prince up to?), and the modern-day interruptions make it take longer. As pretty, however, as a fruit salad -- one dominated by melons. With Shashi Kapoor; photographed by Walter Lassally; written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala; produced by Ismail Merchant; directed by James Ivory. (1983) — Duncan Shepherd
