Somewhere it has been said that this is an insult to Jack Kerouac. But except for that, there is not a lot to recommend the movie; and even that would seem a stronger point if one could be surer that Jack Kerouac would have been pervious to insult. The not-a-lot that is in fact recommendable includes several isolated bits which, if one is willing to forget or not be bothered by who and how avant-garde these characters are supposed to be, are deeply submerged in a spirit of big-city blues and stoop-shouldered fatalism. John Heard, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek play, respectively, Kerouac, Neal Cassady, and wife. Written and directed by John Byrum. (1979) — Duncan Shepherd
