A romantic-comic Rashomon: first we get "his" angle on their affair, then "hers." The gimmick, even as applied to relationships, is not new (see André Cayatte's two-part Anatomy of a Marriage, see the TV movie Divorce His/Divorce Hers). What's new is that a man, Ken Kwapis, directed the first part; and a woman, Marisa Silver, the second. (Another man, Brian Hohlfeld, wrote the script for both.) But this is mere politics, mere diplomacy, not art. Most of that last entity is confined to Elizabeth Perkins, who, besides nice hair, nice smile, nice clothes (especially nice bathrobe), uncovers a profound gift for light comedy. Kevin Bacon, voice like a chain saw, shows only a hearsay knowledge of the form. With Sharon Stone and Anthony LaPaglia. (1991) — Duncan Shepherd
