Not so much a title as a "pitch." Lemmon, Matthau, together again, as a couple of post-retirement Minnesota ice fishermen who have been wrangling with one another for fifty-five years ("Moron!" "Putz!") and are wrangling now over the new widow on their block (Ann-Margret, not acting her age, but, in a bathing suit, looking it). The two stars are not a unit, of course, and it's only fair to report that Lemmon puts more into this one (more feeling, more shading) than does Matthau (moose imitations). The "So what?" routine belongs in any highlight reel of the twosome; the rest of it can be consciencelessly filed with the orange peels and the melon rinds. It says quite a lot about the movie that the best part of it is the collection of outtakes tacked on at the end, in the much-copied manner of Cannonball Run. With Daryl Hannah, Burgess Meredith, Ossie Davis; directed by Donald Petrie. (1993) — Duncan Shepherd
