A dream of overnight success on the New York art scene, as well as of a longer road to written-in-the-stars true love, realized in the dreamiest cinematic style: the dizziest, the dopiest. There are a number of recognizable points of connection with the Dickens novel on which the movie is shakily based (the actress Kim Dickens, in a small part, isn't one of them); and there are a couple of teasing erotic moments prior to the clobbering erotic moment of nude modelling over a pounding rock song and in front of a quivering camera. With Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert De Niro, Anne Bancroft, Chris Cooper; directed by Alfonso Cuarón. (1998) — Duncan Shepherd
