Say what you will about (and against) Under the Cherry Moon, but it was a most unusual movie. This, Prince's next fictional effort, is decidedly more usual, decidedly more like Purple Rain: an extended music video, all fog and colored lights, about an extended battle of the bands, the "spiritual" vs. the "funky" -- or perhaps the "sacred" vs. the "profane," to borrow the terms of the Debussy piece which, together with some Ravel and some Fauré, is cheekily quoted on the soundtrack. The spiritual aspect of it is certainly the least usual, especially as hilariously embodied in a gamine named "Aura," who scribbles down poems in a calligraphic style suitable for framing and hanging. With Morris Day, Jerome Benton, and Ingrid Chavez. (1990) — Duncan Shepherd
