Jamie Uys's surprise 1980 hit out of South Africa -- out of nowhere, in effect -- is in one respect unrepeatable: the surprise part of it, if not also the magnitude of the hit. But the lightness of his touch has not gotten any heavier, nor has the sloppiness of it gotten slicker. And although he calculatedly covers much the same ground, the outbreaks of slapstick are remarkably as spontaneous and unjaded as before. Plus there are some impressive displays of trail wisdom: how to fend off a hyena if you're only three feet tall; how to escape a raging brush fire if you can't outrun it. With Lena Farugia, Hans Strydom, and N!xau. (1990) — Duncan Shepherd
