A strange-bedfellows suspense thriller: the unstructured director Robert Altman at work on an original screen story by the formulaic novelist John Grisham. The former, even though tempering his self-indulgent mannerisms, generates little in the way of tension or excitement, but a great deal in the way of atmospheric weather: Savannah in the path of Hurricane Geraldo. Where the conventional mystery element in The Player gave a boost to Altman's noodling satire of Tinsel Town, the mystery element here is forlornly all on its own -- all, that is, except for the great deal of rain, wind, rippling shadows, etc. And that's far from nothing; that's close to the fundamentals of film.
