The hypocrisies of small-town society in mid-Twenties Brazil are exposed with considerable relish. So, too, are the architectural glories of the colonial coastal town of Parati. So, too, with perhaps greatest relish of all, and with certainly greater redundancy, are the anatomical glories of Sonia Braga. This actress, who gives infinite attention to how many buttons of her bodice should be undone or where her hemline should be hiked up to, can spare little attention to the sort of character she is supposed to play. To be fair, however, not much of a character has been written for her in the first place. From a novel by Jorge Amado; with Marcello Mastroianni; directed by Bruno Barreto. (1983) — Duncan Shepherd
