Prior to this, “fresh and dipped” meant a preference for hand-packed ice cream cones. Any fashion doc that comes out of the gate championing Little Richard as the architect of hip hop habiliment and an “iconic symbol of freedom” can’t be all bad. But without so much as a hint of James Dean or Marlon Brando, Easy Rider is quickly given credit for officially christening the outlaw look. Loads of familiar heads talk to the camera, but the highpoint is a gentleman known simply as “Mayor,” the curator of “sneaker heaven.” (In his youth, “Mayor” shopped exclusively at “the Jew man.”) How many shoes in his closet? Enough to wear a different pair for seven-and-a-half years. Very enjoyable to watch the momentum continue through the “blackenized” ‘70’s, but lustre fades when the music begins to take a back seat to marketing and brand identification.
