Grind-it-out road comedy about a slightly uptight hunk (Ben Affleck, as loose-limbed as usual) who sows his first and last wild oats between New York City and Savannah, under the guidance of a free-spirited cutenik (Sandra Bullock, the Kerouac of cuteniks), while on his way to his own wedding. The big cinematic events, which is to say big special effects, are the slo-mo confetti storms of hailstones, raindrops, and flower petals. How else could a contemporary Hollywood filmmaker be expected to express the depth of his feelings? With Maura Tierney, Steve Zahn, Blythe Danner, Ronny Cox; written by Marc Lawrence; directed by Bronwen Hughes. (1999) — Duncan Shepherd
