Canine reincarnation tale. A highway fatality is reborn in the fur of a Golden Retriever, who experiences vivid but fragmentary flashbacks to his past life. When he finds his way back to his former family, a Ghost-like situation seems to be in progress, with a dubious business partner moving in on the widow. A surprise twist awaits, and a spiritual lesson. Though it's in essence a kiddie show (telepathic doggy dialogue, slow-motion romping, slapstick pratfalls), it makes room for a wide range of moods: shameless rabble-rousing (an experimental monkey fleeing captivity with a short-legged pup in his arms), shameless heart-tugging (the canine mentor dying of a bullet wound), nutty nostalgia (the dog crawling into bed with, and gazing longingly at, his former "wife"). The Italian director, Carlo Carlei, keeps the low-to-the-ground camera untiringly moving. Doggedly, if you prefer. With Matthew Modine, Nancy Travis, Eric Stoltz. (1995) — Duncan Shepherd
