A dud about the bomb. The top-secret doings at Los Alamos are understandably not understandable, and they seem to roll along without assistance while the actors coil for the next big polemical haymaker: "It's all about ass, isn't it? Ya kick it or ya lick it." The biggest wallop, however, is a fabricated lab accident, with a ghastly aftermath. It's quite fair and necessary that anti-nuke arguments base themselves on what could possibly happen: but not when presented as straight history. Paul Newman, Dwight Schultz, John Cusack, Laura Dern, Bonnie Bedelia, Natasha Richardson; co-written by Bruce Robinson; directed and co-written by Roland Joffé. (1989) — Duncan Shepherd
