Amazing but true story of Cold War espionage, a KGB agent passing state secrets to a French amateur stationed in Moscow, early Eighties. Amazing but true but amazingly, truly unsuspenseful and dull. But earnest and diligent. The two principals are played by Emir Kusturica and Guillaume Canet (film directors in addition to actors), somewhat elusive portrayals of enigmatic figures, and even Fred Ward as Ronald Reagan adds little spark: “You know, I was supposed to do a film with Ford,” he muses aloud while watching that Cold War allegory, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. With Willem Dafoe, Alexandra Maria Lara, Dina Korzun; directed by Christian Carion. (2009) — Duncan Shepherd
