A Birth of a Nation for the nation of Israel, three and a half hours in labor. Otto Preminger's adaptation of the Leon Uris novel is visually majestic, with some memorable sequences (and of course memorable theme music by Ernest Gold), but also some grinding dialogue and strained performances that shrink the dimensions of the thing. Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Sal Mineo, Jill Haworth, Lee J. Cobb, Ralph Richardson. (1960) — Duncan Shepherd
