Some fairly frightening jousts with unseen forces in a Civil War-period mansion, debilitated a bit by a Christmas Carol ghost who appears to be made up head-to-toe with Gold Medal flour, and by a climactic encounter with a jolly, obese Satan who is exactly the sort of demon you would expect to encounter in an old 20th Century-Fox musical. Very earnest performance by Richard Crenna as a university psychologist who holds out stubbornly for a rational explanation, while his wife, Joanna Pettet, innately more sensitive and intuitive, implores him to wise up. Directed by Gus Trikonis. (1978) — Duncan Shepherd
