Going-through-the-motions paranoia thriller that goes through them like greased lightning. Plenty of high-tech whoosh and whirl, in other words, but no emotional impact. The governmental Goliaths, who want to institute a Surveillance Society (the inclusion of Gabriel Byrne and Loren Dean in the cast helps to call to mind Wim Wenders's similar vision in The End of Violence), are credited with such fabulous efficiency as to stay constantly on the heels of a lone little lamming David, but never quite enough of it to overtake him. But then he's not really alone. He has, if not God, in fact far more hands-on than God, director Tony Scott and producer Jerry Bruckheimer on his side. Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, Regina King, Lisa Bonet. (1998) — Duncan Shepherd
