Death Wish for the art house set as the generally dependable Paul Verhoeven (Turkish Fruit, Starship Troopers) returns after a four-year absence with a redundant rape fulfillment fantasy. The immutable CEO (and daughter of a celebrated mass murderer) responsible for a successful string of violent, sexually oriented video games becomes the victim of a brutal predator. The goon continues to pile on the harassment long after the assault ends, the kicker being that star Isabelle Huppert doesn’t want the cat-and-mouse game to end. We open with the attack and then proceed to relive it several times over, including a version that has our heroine treating her assailant to a violent reversal. Ultimately the identity of the masked attacker is moot: in Verhoeven’s eyes every man is capable of rape. Perhaps a second viewing will yield more. For now, I’d rather revisit Showgirls.
