A fairy-tale kingdom -- elves, ogres, giants, fairy godmothers -- sprinkled with modern anachronisms in the manner of a latter-day Disney cartoon. Anne Hathaway is game enough as a Cinderella blessed, or cursed, at birth by the "gift" of obedience, requiring her to acquiesce to any statement in the imperative mood -- a viable premise, far overextended. The story is adapted from the popular children's book by Gail Carson Levine, and played with a mincing preciosity designed to discourage everyone but devotees. With Hugh Dancy, Cary Elwes, Minnie Driver, Vivica A. Fox, and Jimi Mistry; directed by Tommy O'Haver. (2004) — Duncan Shepherd
