Twin brothers (Raúl Castillo in a dual role) grow up on opposite sides of the law. Stop me if you’ve heard this one. At any moment, it could have taken a generic turn towards boogeyman frights or comic book adventure before settling into a regulation cops vs. hooded avenger thriller. (It was, after all, co-written by Joe Carnahan, author of the carcinogenic Death Wish reboot.) To those quick to characterize it as the first superhero movie with an all-Latino cast I ask, musn’t a protagonist somehow acquire superpowers in order to qualify for the #1 slot? Rather than being jabbed by a radioactive spider or possessing other-worldly powers, our hero simply mounts his chopper and takes to the streets of East L.A. in search of bad guys with identical forearm tattoos. IMDB lists the theatrical running time as 107 minutes, but my butt is still blistering after making it through the toilsome 142 minute “festival” cut. Ben Hernandez Bray co-wrote and directed.
