Fundamental sports-fan fantasy (and delusion): that he, or of course she, could coach the team better than the coach. It all comes true for a New York Knicks fan, and because the fan is Whoopi Goldberg there is the bonus of giggling and finger-pointing in the shower room. For actual (undeluded) fans, there is the bonus, or rather the sole asset, of getting to see plenty of current basketballers as themselves (e.g., Dennis Rodman) or incognito (e.g., Gary Payton), and John Salley has an especially nice easy manner as a sore-kneed veteran who rides the pine. (Substitutions seem to be unheard-of in the current Knick regime.) The finale -- with the last ten seconds of a one-point game delayed by a rabble-rousing sit-in at midcourt -- wipes out any trace of goodwill. With Rick Fox, Malik Sealy, Mark Jackson, and Frank Langella; directed by Steve Rash. (1996) — Duncan Shepherd
