Not a remake of the Rodney Dangerfield rollick, but a Swedish crime thriller brought to American shores under the aegis “Martin Scorsese Presents.” A coke dealer who looks more like a tennis coach (Joel Kinnaman) is forced to draw allegiance with an ex-con (Matias Varela), hunted by criminal and lawman alike, and a mafia enforcer (Dragomir Mrsic) for whom every hit is Take Your 8-Year-Old Daughter to Work Day. As per the obsequious bows inherent in William Monahan’s screenplay for The Departed, images of a boxing gym and a quick insert shot of a taxi driver wiping human filth out of the back seat must have been tribute enough for Marty to offer His dispensation. Some of it works, but retooling the Steven Prince gun purchase in Taxi Driver to include a toddler on the bed belongs on HBO, not in a Scorsese-backed theatrical release. The opening action set pieces are expertly handled and there is at least one fresh cut-throat spin — sewing drugs inside the pelts of live dogs and using them as mules. It’s a fun four reels or so (especially if you’re in the mood for a Scorsese suck-up job), but while every film is entitled to one coincidence, said happenstance should not occur in the third act.
