A burlesque of the same-named television series of the Fifties, or at least a burlesque of the main character of it. Dan Aykroyd has exactly the nail-file voice and fresh-mown hair to pass as the nephew of Jack Webb's Sgt. Friday, and the walking-anachronism brand of humor makes him rather more endearing than laughable. But instead of a matched-bookend for a partner, he gets one of the "new breed" -- someone a lot less stiff-necked, a lot more loosey-goosenecked, someone the youthful filmgoer of the Eighties can identify with: the obnoxious Tom Hanks. And instead of a normal day on the Robbery-and-Homicide detail, he gets devil worshippers and a sacrificial virgin. With Harry Morgan, Alexandra Paul, Christopher Plummer, and Elizabeth Ashley; directed by Tom Mankiewicz. (1987) — Duncan Shepherd
