Edward Norton enacts a soft-spoken, slick-shootin', sore-thumb cowboy in the San Fernando Valley (nowhere sorer than in synagogue), who enters an inadvisable relationship with a too-young girl, the succulently photographed Evan Rachel Wood. His self-styled Westerner persona ("You can be anybody you want to be. You just have to decide on it") injects psychosis rather than melodrama into the situation, and the film succumbs to repetition and inertia. Not even an improbable stumble onto an Old West movie set, when in flight from the law, can revive it. With David Morse, Rory Culkin, Bruce Dern, and Geoffrey Lewis; written and directed by David Jacobson. (2006) — Duncan Shepherd
