Friends don’t let friends drive drunk, lest they wind up spending the rest of their lives paralyzed and in a wheelchair. With a title like this, can it get any cuter? It can — when the viewer finds Gus “I Traced Psycho” Van Sant at his well-intentioned best. From the man who brought us Drugstore Cowboy — one of the few narrative films to actually explore the reasons behind America’s love affair with taking drugs — comes a cautionary tale of “Just say no.” It’s based on the book by John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix), who turned what many would view as a life-halting handicap into a career as a cartoonist. Jonah Hill is in full Dr. Braino mode, fer sure, as the puffed up AA guru dismissively flipping his hair while carting around a cigarette holder as a fashion accessory. The film also doubles as a lesson in 12-step filmmaking: instead of filming group encounters in eye-gouging closeup, maybe try moving the camera at least 12 steps back from the characters’ nostrils.
