Flashy but extremely untidy comedy-thriller. A state of confusion is, perhaps, to be expected in a movie that juggles opera and white slavery, that juxtaposes the most wildly disparate settings, that buries its people beneath junkpiles of unrevealing quirks and knickknacks. And it is only fair to acknowledge the deliberateness of that state. On the other hand, it also seems fair, even mandatory, to say that the jumble of elements works against not just internal coherence, but against any underlying sincerity that might prompt a viewer to make allowances. With Frederic Andrei and Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez; directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix. (1982) — Duncan Shepherd
