A soap-opera writer gets a knock on the head and dreams he's in his fictional Ashford Falls among his fictional cast of characters, on Beyond Our Dreams. There's no real knack for parody -- no sense of what goes on in daytime soaps as distinct from prime-time ones -- and there's no consistent point of view. The writer controls some parts of the experience, in lucid-dream manner, by tapping it out on his typewriter; but there's a rival writer throwing in his own two cents' worth, and the dreamer himself is not always privy to information made available to the viewer. John Candy characteristically quashes any impulse to form a rhyme with "dandy." Mariel Hemingway, Emma Samms, Raymond Burr; directed by Tom Mankiewicz. (1991) — Duncan Shepherd
