A textbook example of why you should never watch a preview prior to seeing the picture it’s hyping. We open on a mind-boggling performance by card mechanic Richard Turner. (Fair warning: here comes the surprise unveiled by said preview.) Imagine how much more boggled you might have been if the trailer hadn’t tipped you to the fact that Turner is blind. (Or maybe we were supposed to figure it out based on the brief foreshadowing shot of Turner shaving in the dark?) His introduction to gambling came at a young age, courtesy of James Garner and Maverick. That was a few years before macular dystrophy started robbing him of his vision. Since then, Turner has spent his life trying to be known as something more than just “the blind guy.” He lives with a fan of Bicycles in one hand and a deck of Bees in the other; the only time we observe him not clutching at least one pack of cards is when he swims. “What he does with cards, a magician can’t do,” says his son and stage manager Asa Spades Turner. Director Luke Korem’s documentary proves the lad’s point. (2017) — Scott Marks
