Life aboard a rocketship, twenty years in flight, looks pretty much like life in the college dorms, near the end of Winter Quarter, when boredom runs amok. These unbarbered astronauts all drift in wayward directions, dreaming of the summer surf, perusing a comic book called Falling in Love, or playing pranks with a novelty-store chicken and pair of goggle-eyed glasses. At every turn, with a hopeful tug at your sleeve, you are reminded of Kubrick; and the chief reason for maintaining a tolerant outlook on this sophomoric shoestringer (the special effects department, needing a "creature" from outer space, fabricates an oversized tomato with yellow spots, toes, and beach-ball bounce) is the feeling that you're watching a skit which the neighborhood kids have put on, for a ten-cent admission charge, in hopes of collecting a little extra pocket money. The creative chores are split between Dan O'Bannon, co-writer, editor, and special effects supervisor, and John Carpenter, co-writer, producer, and director. (1975) — Duncan Shepherd
