Brutal bit of manipulation by John Hughes, involving a pair of vagabond con artists (big Bill and little Curly Sue) who work their scam on a Chicago ice princess, get her to let her hair down and open up her heart. No child star was ever more unspontaneous and overdirected than Alisan Porter. Kelly Lynch, who will not stand by and watch herself be outacted by a pipsqueak, demonstrates how far beyond direction she can go. And Georges Delerue, as so often in his composing career, makes you wish you were watching a better movie, and almost believe you are. With James Belushi and John Getz. (1991) — Duncan Shepherd
