Luis Buñuel's black comedy about a would-be ladykiller (a literal killer of ladies, that is). The sum of the parts, as they say, is greater than the whole -- for that matter greater than most other wholes as well. Memorable preludial scene, planted squarely on that common ground occupied by surrealists and Freudians. Unforgettable climactic scene (not to imply sexual completion), involving a mannequin facsimile of the heroine. And indeed all the scenes leading up to that one are linked together with a subtle dreamlike logic. Ernesto Alonso, Rita Macedo, and Miroslava. (1955) — Duncan Shepherd
