American remake of a very lucrative French export by Jean-Charles Tacchella (to whom, whatever happened?). It could hardly have gotten any shallower than it already was, without complete evaporation. And indeed the roles for the secondary mates (William Petersen, Sean Young) have been considerably beefed up. At the same time, though, the morality has been straightened out and tidied up -- the central infidelity rationalized, postponed, and toned down -- so that audience sympathies are, if anything, even simpler and easier. And there's only enough depth left to barely moisten the soles of the feet. Ted Danson, Isabella Rossellini, Lloyd Bridges, Norma Aleandro; directed by Joel Schumacher. (1989) — Duncan Shepherd
