Old-fashioned (as old at least as Rider Haggard) African safari adventure, from a Michael Crichton novel: restless natives, defecting porters, a hippopotamus attack, a Lost City, an angry volcano. A few newer-fashioned touches, too: a talking gorilla (her sign language computer-translated into an audible voice), a leech attached to a penis (just for laughs), and a diamond-powered laser gun for cutting through the walls of a mountain, a pack of man-killing apes, what-have-you. Laura Linney, as a resourceful former CIA operative (diverting heat-seeking missiles with a flare gun), and Ernie Hudson, as the dandified guide, make strong impressions. With Dylan Walsh, Tim Curry, Joe Don Baker; directed by Frank Marshall. (1995) — Duncan Shepherd
