Nicholas Hoult, an American expat/ex-car thief living in Germany, comes out of retirement to bankroll a kidney transplant for Felicity Jones, his girlfriend of 30 days. Much of Hoult’s acting style consists of covering his face to deflect shards of laminated safety glass, while Academy Award-nominee Jones bleached her hair for the role. Cast as rival drug lords, top shelf thesps Anthony Hopkins and Ben Kingsley — appearing onscreen together for the first time — are foolishly directed to take a back seat to an otherwise routine chase picture involving look-alike romantic leads. Lazy-eye camerawork and fracturable editing schemes contribute to borderline incoherent action scenes. It’s only when the two heavyweights surface — approximately 30% of the running time — that the film shows signs of life. Still, I wouldn’t pass up a chance to see Kingsley’s pop culture-espousing Turkish psychopath or a red-faced Hopkins successfully out-shouting the deafening hue of his sky-blue leisure suit. Directed by Eran Creevy (Welcome to the Punch). (2017) — Scott Marks
