The ten-minute prologue, of the Rocky Mountain Rescue team in action, should drench the palms of the mildest acrophobe. From there, it's pretty much downhill (so to speak), despite a plane crash, three scattered valises containing $30 million each, and a gang of bad guys who keep trying to outdo one another in badness. (John Lithgow is so bad he must speak in a foreign accent: "Kill a few people, they call you a murderer. Kill a million, they call you a conqueror. Go figure!") Some of the trick work is enjoyable (process shots, miniatures), and Sylvester Stallone is photographed often in his favorite pastime of sprinting in slow-motion toward the camera while bombs and guns go off behind him. He also does a lot of chin-ups on sheer rock. And once he does a clean-and-jerk of one of the bad guys for the purpose of impaling him on a stalactite. Neat-o. In accompaniment, Trevor Jones has changed just a few notes (for the worse) from his rousing Last of the Mohicans score. With Janine Turner and Michael Rooker; directed by Renny Harlin.
