A cuckold, too chicken to take revenge first-hand, kills himself in such a manner as to frame the lover for murder. (The ungrieving widow is no help: "Leave me out of this.") Black-ish, noir-ish crime comedy calls to mind the Coen brothers, or their Fargo at any rate, if only because of the accumulating bodies and the droll law-woman (Janeane Garofalo) who comes on the case halfway through the film: "A murder scene is not really crowd-appropriate." Exaggeration is rife; logic scarce. Director David Dobkin, a protégé of co-producer Ridley Scott, honors his mentor with a clip from Alien on a motel television. Written by Matt Healy; with Joaquin Phoenix, Vince Vaughn, Georgina Cates, Scott Wilson. (1998) — Duncan Shepherd
