AIDS-era La Ronde. The round robin of sex partners proposes a number of alternatives to old-fashioned copulation: fully clothed sex, unconsummated sex, no-contact sex. All in all it creates a climate of tolerance, somewhat at war with the climate of tedium. The grayish dull color sets the tone, and the human interaction, for all its restraint, is as over-oiled as that in a porn film: the babe in the scoop-necked spandex is sobbing in the front pew of the church, a clear signal to the handyman that she would welcome a comforting touch; the guapa young housemaid is caught leafing through a volume of Oriental erotica, an open invitation to her kinky employer. With Linda Fiorentino, Elias Koteas, Grace Zabriskie, Malcolm McDowell, Seymour Cassel, Asumpta Serna; written and directed by Temistocles Lopez. (1993) — Duncan Shepherd
