The apparent plan was to treat the formation of the Village People in the style of an old Hollywood musical, though there seems to be some uncertainty as to which old musical and what that style was. Nancy Walker, a directorial debutante, shows more care with roles she herself could be playing (those of Tammy Grimes, June Havoc, Barbara Rush, Marilyn Sokol) than with new responsibilities like where to put the camera. The trouble is most acutely felt in the "YMCA" production number, which is just good enough to make us aware of the visual-aid possibilities for that song -- and sorry we're not actually seeing them. The Village People themselves remain a potent energy source, despite the fact that their homosexual bent has been toned down or naively not noticed, and despite the unaccountable non-inclusion of "Macho Man." With Steve Guttenberg, Valerie Perrine, and Bruce Jenner. (1980) — Duncan Shepherd
